We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Massar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
If you love something and you’ve gotten whispers of positive feedback then don’t you dare give up. If you merely like something (or are doing it for external rewards) and you’ve received little positive feedback…SEE YA! And listen to life’s whispers – your intuition and the universe’s feedback – they never shout. When those whispers tickle your spine, you can be sure you heard them properly.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my own business because I wanted ownership and control of my life. My time. My relationships. My failures. My successes. My bank account. And I want to help others achieve the same. So I built my studio around empowering entrepreneurs, creatives, and talent so they can achieve financial independence and squeeze everything out of their talent. It’s been quite a journey, but what has kept me on track is the people. I love people and feel lucky to have a business where I can put people and my relationships first. It’s why I’m so excited about the book I recently released entitled “Legal Business Roadmap: 9 essential Steps for Small Businesses, Entrepreneurs & Creatives”. The goal is to give more people peace of mind for their pursuit. While there’s plenty of good information out there, it can be so undigestible and unpalatable. My book breaks it down beautifully and efficiently. It will demystify the world of the suits, give readers ownership over their careers, and build confidence. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that if I’m grounded in my beliefs, strong in my core, and clear in my mind then I can exceed my wildest dreams.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well this is LA baby! So first and foremost, if the sun is up then we’re gonna be outside. A hike anywhere but ideally up to the top of Griffith Park at sunrise or sunset. Throw in a day in Elysian Park or Echo Park before walking to Chavez Ravine for a Dodger Game. After we could grab a drink at the Shortstop (first bar I ever went to). A day on Sunset in Silverlake is always fun…a walk around the reservoir…cocktails at Stella a must…or a pint from Red lion Tavern! Maybe dinner at La Pergoletta in Los Feliz then a slice of pie (and glass of wine) from House of Pies. Breakfast at the Pantry downtown then go to the Arts District and visit some galleries (Hauser Wirth or Nicodim) then eat at Manuela. Since we’re downtown a visit to Phillipe’s for some French dip sandwiches is a must. Then romp through Chinatown or Little Tokyo for some jazz. Then drinks at Cliftons or Mrs. Fish. A breakfast burrito at Lucky Boys in Pasadena will set us up right the next day. Then a day in the Huntington Gardens. Then go west for a show at the Comedy Store on Sunset…followed by some debauchery on the strip. Some late-night pancakes at Mel’s! Add in some music at Troubador or The Fonda. A show at Largo. A visit to The Bungalow or a rooftop in Santa Monica. Then a trip up PCH to Malibu. Ayyy I’m getting all excited now! We’ll have fun, no doubt.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
No doubt I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of many people. But two books I continually go back to are the “Tao of Pooh” by Benjamin Hoff and “The Discovery of Slowness” by Sten Nadolny. They remind me: (1) to seek joy; (2) slow is smooth and smooth is fast; and (3) pressure is a privilege. As for shouting out a person…I’d have to go with my dad JC Massar. The man has an insatiable appetite for knowledge and believes his legacy isn’t about leaving something for people but leaving something IN people. After working in finance for decades he retired (for about 48 hours) then became an angel investor in small startups. He’s always said “Invest in people, not ideas.” Watching him build genuine relationships with founders and shepherd them through entrepreneurship has taught me more than I could ever imagine. He inspires me to keep asking questions and pushing my own limitations.
